A Word on Coffee Tasting
Coffee is described using a wide variety of terms, but the most important are flavor, acidity and body. Understanding these will help the descriptions to make sense, as well as let you describe what you enjoy in a cup of coffee.
Flavor: This is the overall impression in the mouth. It combines Acidity and Body, as well as many Secondary tastes and Aromas. Each coffee growing region offers a unique flavor profile that reflects on where and how it was grown.
Acidity: The taste of bright, lively notes in the coffee. It is sensed mostly in the front of the mouth and tongue. It is a good quality, not related to bitterness or responsible for upset stomach. Acidity is prized by many cuppers since it is the product of high altitude planting.
Body: Often called Mouthfeel, body is the sense of weight and thickness of the brew. Brewing method and amount of ground coffee used influences this greatly. Smooth, rich, and earthy are often used to describe full bodied coffee.
A note on choosing your coffee. All coffee offered on this list is Specialty Grade and has been carefully cupped for quality. That said, remember that beauty truly is in the eye of the beholder when it comes to coffee. Whatever your personal preference may be as far as flavor profile and origin are concerned, it is fine. (That is unless Maxwell House is your preference!) Only dont be afraid to try something new. You may be pleasantly surprised. Each new crop brings the potential for a wonderful cup of coffee and a taste of the land where it was grown. So slow down and savor some today.
